United: 322 voluntary departures reduce layoffs

United Air says 322 more workers take buyouts, voluntary furloughs, reducing need for layoffs

-- United Airlines said on Thursday that 322 ramp and customer service workers have taken early-out and voluntary furloughs, reducing the number of layoffs the company says it will need.

United offered voluntary programs for the International Association of Machinist workers in July and again in September. It said the voluntary departures by IAM workers have reduced the need for layoffs in that group by 40 percent.

On Oct. 8 United said it will lay off 414 Teamsters mechanics at its San Francisco maintenance base. United also said 100 mechanics have accepted voluntary departures.

United has been aiming to eliminate 7,000 positions across its work groups. It avoided flight attendant layoffs altogether when 1,500 of them accepted voluntary furloughs.

Shares in United parent UAL Corp. rose $2.95, or 40 percent, to close at $10.30
